We’re going to walk you through how to get an America the Beautiful Pass and break down the different types of passes available to suit every need.
What is the America the Beautiful Pass?
The America the Beautiful Pass, also known as the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass, is an annual pass that covers entrance fees at sites managed by several federal agencies, including:
National Park Service
U.S. Forest Service
Fish and Wildlife Service
Bureau of Land Management
Bureau of Reclamation
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
For just $80 per year, the pass allows you (and up to three accompanying adults) entry into participating locations. Children under 16 are always admitted for free. If you’re planning to visit multiple parks or federal recreation areas in a year, the America the Beautiful Pass quickly pays for itself. We have already more than paid for ours this year by visiting 3 National Parks.
Different America the Beautiful Passes Available
There are several types of passes to accommodate various visitors:
1. Annual Pass - $80
The standard America the Beautiful Annual Pass is perfect for anyone who enjoys frequent visits to federal lands. For a flat fee of $80, you can visit as many federal recreational areas as you like for an entire year. Whether it's hiking in Yosemite National Park, exploring the canyons in Zion, or marveling at the geothermal wonders of Yellowstone, this pass covers all entrance fees.
2. Senior Pass - $20 (Annual) or $80 (Lifetime)
If you’re 62 years or older, you can take advantage of the Senior Pass, which is available at a discounted rate. The annual pass is only $20, or you can opt for a lifetime pass for $80. In addition to entrance fees, the Senior Pass often offers discounts on other services like campsites and guided tours.
3. Military Pass - Free
Members of the U.S. military and their dependents, including current service members, Reserve, and National Guard, are eligible for a free annual pass. Just bring a valid military ID to any federal recreation site to obtain yours.
4. Veterans and Gold Star Families Pass - Free
Veterans and Gold Star Families are entitled to free entry to national parks and federal lands. A form of ID proving veteran status, such as a Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC), or documentation for Gold Star families will grant you this pass.
5. Access Pass - Free
If you have a permanent disability, you’re eligible for the Access Pass, which provides free entry to all participating sites. The pass not only covers entry fees but may also provide discounts on amenities like camping and guided tours.
6. Volunteer Pass - Free
For those who give back through volunteer work at federal recreation sites, the Volunteer Pass is a reward for contributing 250 hours or more. The pass offers the same benefits as the annual pass and serves as a token of appreciation for your hard work.
7. 4th Grade Pass - Free
To encourage young Americans to explore the outdoors, the Every Kid Outdoors Program offers a free pass for 4th graders. The pass provides free entry for the student and their family during their 4th-grade school year, offering a wonderful opportunity for families to bond over nature and history.
